Time is long overdue for new justice center

October 5, 2002
I commend the recent attention The Indianapolis Star has given Marion County's current dilemma of jail overcrowding and inadequate courthouse space. As an Indianapolis area attorney, I know all too well of the need for a new justice center.

The need for additional court space is particularly glaring: A more than 40-year-old building designed for 16 courts now houses twice as many courts with caseloads that have probably quadrupled. Former storage rooms, practically closets, have become our courtrooms.

Our citizens deserve much better. The time to seriously implement a permanent solution is long overdue, and I praise The Star's leadership on this issue.
